Chichen Itza (or as it's pronounced Chichen Itza ) is an Itza Maya city founded in the pre- Columbian era , located between Valladolid and Mérida in Mexico 's Yucatán Peninsula . It was probably the religious center of Yucatan for a time. Today it is the second most visited archaeological site in Mexico. The height of the pyramid of Kukulkan (Kukuul Kaan), known as El Castillo (castle) in Chichen-Itza, is 24 m compared to the upper platform. (It is lower than the pyramid at Uxmal , whose height was 40 m at the end of the 10th century .) It is one of the new seven wonders of the world , selected on 7 July 2007 . According to legend, the city was led by Quetzalcoatl in the 10th century.Taken by the Toltecs .
